Mercer County Ohio Sheriff’s Office

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Junior Deputy Program originally began as the Explorer program in the late 1960’s and was affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. Since the program’s inception we have continued the tradition of recognizing our youth who have a strong interest in all phases of Law Enforcement. We actually have current employees that were former Junior Deputies.

The program accepts youth from 14 to 21 years of age and have completed the eighth grade, as well as maintain at least a C- average, be of good moral character, and have no serious arrests or convictions. The program accepts members from all six school districts in Mercer County.

The Junior Deputies are involved in numerous activities including parking cars, assisting with parades, the Mercer County Fair and more. The Junior Deputy program is a year round program including ride-alongs with Deputies and assisting in our 911 dispatch center. Meetings are once a month in the evenings for a meeting and/or training.

Applications are accepted throughout the year. Anyone interested in learning more about the program should email Detective Sergeant Chad Fortkamp at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
